  • Dominican Republic Summer Internship | 2010

This past summer I had the opportunity to return to a land that I love: the Dominican Republic.

For the majority of the six weeks I was there, I taught summer school to children who are sponsored by Kids Alive International — 1st grade Bible, Geography, Math, and Language in the mornings, and 5th-8th grade Photography during the afternoon.

Though summer school was a bit more relaxed than the normal school year (no grading), I decided to step it up a notch.

Stickers were definitely a driving incentive for each of my classes to complete assignments to my approval. Whoever had the most stickers by the end of the summer, showing they had completed their assignments, would each receive a Spanish Good & Evil book. It is an extremely well put together Bible in comic form. Talk about a serious motivator! Few children ever receive a book of their own. What better way than to share with them the Truth.

Here’s a slideshow I put together that gives a broad summary of my time down there. Keep your eyes peeled…you might see a few pics of yours truly! happy

My summer was not short of challenges. But those challenges were rewarding. God is faithful to show Himself strong during those times.

The children who were the hardest to love became the most precious to me. When children are most unlovable, that is when they need love most.

My prayer was that God would use me to make a difference in those kid’s lives.

I’m grateful God allowed me to join Him in the work He was already doing down there and I look forward to seeing how He continues to work.

    I love 1 Corinthians 3 where it says…

“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

“So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

“Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.

“For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, [ye are] God’s building.

“According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
